CSIC researchers participate in a project for drug development against rare diseases

The Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness (MINECO), within the subprogram RETOS-COLABORACIÓN of the National Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation 2013-2016, has awarded a grant to the project “Development of treatments for rare diseases of lysosomal deposit” (RTC-2016-5686-1) in which the group of Prof. Miquel Coll of the Structural Biology Unit (SBU) at IBMB participates.

The project, co-financed by the European Union, is a collaboration between the biotech Company Minoryx Therapeutics S.L., the SBU group and a molecular genetics group at the University of Barcelona.

The contribution of the SBU team will be the resolution of the 3D structure of target proteins in complex with effector molecules with therapeutic potential, designed by Minoryx.

The structures of these complexes, solved by X-ray diffraction using synchrotron radiation, will allow to visualize at atomic resolution how the drugs are bound to the target proteins and thus facilitate their further design in order to make them more effective.
